This seems to mainly focus on local news (In which case people would care about a murder) and for profit main stream media- which is more entertainment than news because that’s what makes money.

I guess what you want is information, not news, and for real information you should got to outlets like npr, or pbs.

I don’t recall who did the study or even how, but I remember hearing 90% of what we worry about never happens. Instead, I imagine the person I’m thinking about as safe and happy with things going along well. My reasoning is, even if I am mistaken, I’ll be in a better mental state to deal with whatever bad thing may have occurred.

Ben: I enjoyed your amusing yet thoughtful reflection on the perils of aging. I am sure my own son, who is 23, feels similarly. I always tell him to “drive carefully,” as if that warning alone will cause him to go the speed limit! As for your mother’s concerns about her medications and their side effects, she is a smart consumer there…many drugs do cause more harm than good. At any rate, both your mother and your grandmother are fortunate to have you in their lives…as am I!

Great article. What I found most striking about the piece is your demonstration of the bureaucratic death grip that the university has on all discussion. There are such exciting issues mentioned in the first paragraph but, of course, all of them are locked behind the wall of ‘media relations.’ I don’t think there is any question as to whether or not the Q & A should be posted online. Not allowing a Q & A is like making a state of the union address but not allowing a response from the opposite party.

Obviously, the university was embarrassed by something that transpired during the Q and A session, otherwise they would have posted it right away. And while the law is on your side, pushing the point won’t win you any friends in their PR department if you post it…so you may want to reconsider. Is it really that important? It has taken me many, many years to learn that sometimes it’s helpful to have friends in high places. You may not need them today, but you never know…especially if you plan a career in journalism.

Either way, I trust you will make the right decision!

I’ve read about. I guess, then, humor is an exaptation of laughter. I think it’s a propos that in laughing at a lot of the absurdities we confront that we indicate the level of seriousness that we assign to the absurdity. Although, I’m not sure if any of this makes it any easier to feel a joke.

Evolutionarily speaking, laughter is the signal that what was perceived as a threat is actually harmless, which pretty well describes how I felt when Pauly Shore’s career ended.
