Only five days left in Chicago. I’ve gotten to the point with my improvising where I consistently act only on instinct and the characters I play are thinly veiled versions of myself. So now I will be getting a lot of reps in so I can hone my instinct. That fits in perfectly with my plan for New York, which is to take fewer classes and instead write and perform more.
I feel as though there’s a trap I could fall into where I take too many classes and workshops, collecting instructors as if one of them will miraculously unlock the master improviser within me. It doesn’t help that the workshop with Piero seemingly had that very effect on me. But, at this point, I feel as though I’ve had my fill of classes and I’ll definitely be taking it down a few notches. Same thing with watching shows, although it doesn’t help that I’ve seen so many tremendous shows while here in Chicago.
Del Close was fond of saying that it’s the job of the improviser to live an interesting life and tell people about it.
I’m going to go do some of that.
